Name Recognition and Writing it Correctly |
Letter Recognition and Sounds |
We use a tracing technique, starting with tracing every letter. As each child progresses we start removing different parts of the letters. The end goal is for the students to be able to write their whole name without tracing it.
Number Recognition and CountingWe use the Handwriting Without Tears for number recognition. We also incorporate counting forwards and backwards every morning as part of our morning meeting. After Christmas break, we add counting by fives and tens.
Recognition of Colors and Shapes. We work on the recognition of colors and shapes through many daily activities.

We use the Handwriting Without Tears program. We use wooden pieces, chalkboards, magnadoodles, and other materials. Another tool we us is Alphabet Soup which helps with learning each letter's sound.
Fine Motor SkillsWe go over the proper use of scissors and have the students demonstrate it. Handwriting Without Tears helps the students learn how to properly hold crayons and pencils. We also have a center that works with their fine motor skills.
